Lake Lure, NC On June 15, 1926 the Town of Lake Lure, North Carolina officially opened to the visitors. Lake Lure was formed on September 24, 1926 when the newly constructed 100 foot concrete dam closed its gates on The Rocky Broad River. In total, the lake would cover 1,500 acres and create twenty-seven winding miles of lakefront shoreline.The addition of the lake to the already picturesque area created a year-round sportsman's paradise in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.

In the late summer and fall of 1986, Dirty Dancing producers were in a race against time and the autumn colors to find the perfect lakeside locale for Kellerman's Mountain Lodge, situated in a location that holds onto summer the longest. 

Luckily for film fans, they found two. Filming was split between Lake Lure, North Carolina, and Pembroke, Virginia. All of the film's choreographed dance scenes occurred within the Lure Woods / Camp Chimney Rock campus.

Though arguably the most memorable, Dirty Dancing was not the first movie filmed on Lake Lure and likely won't be the last. In the fall of 1983, a portion of Stephen King's Firestarter was filmed at Sunset Cove (Grandpa's Cabin).

What once was a sacred Blue Ridge Mountain cut-through, serving the Cherokee and Catawba tribes, now stands the beautiful stagecoach/mining town of Chimney Rock Village, nestled in a mountain gorge beneath Chimney Rock State Park, home to the finale for The Last of the Mohicans. 

In the movie Firestarter, the state park's entrance was briefly reimagined as the Chimney Rock Lake post office, in the fall of 1983.

With more breweries and artists per capita than anywhere else in the country, Asheville earns its nickname "Beer City USA" and offers a unique vibe found nowhere else.

Highland Brewing Company, founded in 1994, leads the impressive stable of craft producers, including Wicked Weed, New Belgium Hi-Wire, and Sierra Nevada,  to name a few.

Built in 1895, America’s largest castle, the Biltmore Estate, is full of beautiful gardens, restaurants, horse stables and a winery. A magnificent movie location since the golden age of Hollywood, Biltmore Estate has served as a majestic backdrop for more than a dozen films, including The Last of the Mohicans.
